Gentoo a lightweight GTK+-based file manager for Unix systems

Gentoo_0.19.12_2012Gentoo is a free file manager for Linux and other Unix-like computer systems created by Emil Brink. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License.

Gentoo is written in C using the GTK+ toolkit , and the "two-pane" concept. What makes gentoo stand out are its graphical configurability and its file typing and styling system. Using the latter, gentoo identifies the type of your files and then uses the style you've defined for the type to determine how to display it in listings.

It is reminiscent of Total Commander or Norton Commander, and according to author himself, gentoo tries to capture the features, the look and feel of legendary file manager from Amiga platform: Directory Opus.

The package includes a set of approximately one-hundred unique handcrafted icons for many different types of files. Additionally, many users like it for its speed, as it is relatively lightweight (see below).

The word gentoo refers to a fast breed of penguin, the Gentoo Penguin. In spite of the name, it has nothing to do with the Gentoo Linux distribution, and did in fact adopt the name first.
The current release series of gentoo is called 0.19.x. It is based on the 2.x series of the GTK+ toolkit, which is the current stable version.

Features.
Some of gentoo's main features include:
Reasonably small and fast (written in C).
Support for most typical file operations (copy, move, rename, makedir etc).
Uses GIO, which means file system access is virtualized.
Direct graphical configuration of most main features.
A powerful file recognition system that allows you to configure how files of different types are listed (what colors and icons), and what happens when you doubleclick them (start image viewers, music players, etc).
Includes more than 120 original pixmap icons.
Free Software, licensed under the GNU General Public License.
As of version 0.19.1, gentoo is "GTK+ 2.x clean", using no deprecated widgets from the 1.x series of GTK+.
